CHALLENGES

The challenge of the project is to develop a container, packaging and label for an existing or new perfume/fragrance from the Jo Malone brand. Where the design has to incorporate:

  • Perfume or fragrance packaging

  • Primary packaging: case or box

  • Secondary packaging: standardized e-commerce for 1, 3 and 6 units

OBJECTIVES

  • Container, packaging and label must be accesible

  • Unisex product

  • For urban adult users with social and environmental awareness

JO MALONE

Highlights art, culture and design alongside British elegance and charm

They have three objectives regarding the environment:

Commitment to improve its environmental impact

In 2020, they set out to reduce industrial waste sent to landfills to 0% in all manufacturing, distribution and innovation centres.

+75% of recyclable packaging

By the end of 2023, they want to achieve a recycled packaging content of over 75% in all their products using PET plastics as it is widely recyclable.

+75% to 100% of packaging is recyclable, refillable, reusable or recoverable

By 2025, they aim to have more than 75% or all packaging be environmentally conscious, for example by introducing FSC certified cardboard.

In addition to introducing new concepts

Fragrance Combining Palette

The brand's first refillable product. The case is multi-use and you only need to buy the refill.

Double fragrance in a single object

Diffusion and example

They encourage consumers to reuse everything from candle containers to cream pots. They do not support associating empty containers with waste, but provide a new vision with possible alternatives.

ACTUAL MARKET

Going deeper into solid perfume, a new concept with many benefits

There are brands that already have a line of solid perfume or fragrances due to the great benefits they provide.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby

  • It's not fickle, allowing you to control the quantities and not waste product

0% alcohol

  • Suitable for more sensitive skin

  • It doesn't evaporate because it has a higher concentration

Application

  • It is placed directly on places such as the neck, wrists, behind the ears, etc.

  • Body temperature helps release the aroma

  • It can be combined with other fragrances to create a personalized aroma

DEFINITION OF THE PROPOSAL

Transmit kindness and positivity through a design that is accessible to the greatest number of users while being aware of the environment

Based on the brand's objectives, the focus of the proposal is to make a refillable, reusable and recoverable product to extend its useful life, while also making it from recycled materials and being recyclable to generate less waste.

CONTAINER PARTS

Generic packaging useful for various fragrances

Solid perfume consists of two main parts, the refillable case and the refills of different fragrances.

  1. Logo-printed top lid of the case

  2. Closed case

  3. Bottom lid of the case

  4. Exploded case

  5. Refill containing the solid perfume

Case

Materials and process: PET plastic by injection process

  1. Translucent container to allow the colour of the refill inside to be seen and to be able to differentiate the fragrances

  2. Upper lid with low reliefs to create a serrated surface and a flat part to facilitate screw-shaped opening

  3. Flat surface with the logo making it easier to read the engraved material and preventing the object from rolling off the surfaces

  4. Bottom lid with low reliefs to create a serrated surface, responsible for regulating the solid perfume stick inside

Refill container

Material and process: PET plastic using the injection process, made from recycled material and ecological inks

  1. Screw opening for the refill lid

  2. Product information

  3. Solid perfume ingredients

  4. Screw opening for the case lid

  5. Product information in Braille

  6. Recycling icons

  7. System that allows rotation when snaps with the case

VARIATIONS

Each fragrance in the solid perfume line has an associated visual concept

To differentiate the fragrances at a glance, we created a conceptual line based on the colors defined by the brand for each aroma.

SYSTEM

Snaps and screw openings to slide the solid perfume

  1. Exploded view of the product, case and refill

  2. Lid section: screw opening to fit with the body of the case and refill

  3. Body section: case and refill

  4. Rotating axis

  5. Base to push the solid perfume

  6. Lower lid fit to be able to slide the solid perfume vertically

PACKAGING

Keeping the brand's line of communication and add those elements that represent each fragrance

Materials and process: paper extracted from responsibly managed forests with offset printing and ecological inks. Embossing process to give relief and close of the box with snaps.

  1. Embossed brand identity

  2. Gradient representing the fragrance

  3. Information about the product

  4. Recycling icons

  5. Embossed representing the fragrance

  6. Explanation of the case reuse system

  7. Explosion and definition of the parts of the product
